About Us
dedicated to Strengthening the rule of law
- The Lawyers at Risk Monitor is an initiative dedicated to strengthening the rule of law by protecting those who uphold it: legal professionals.
- Our mission is to map and analyze attacks against lawyers worldwide and to make this verified data accessible in aggregated form through a secure platform. By providing a trusted, global database, LRM facilitates evidence-based responses, advocacy, policy and legal reform.
The Challenge
The Rule of Law is Under Attack
Around the world, lawyers are facing increasing risks, from harassment and surveillance to disbarment, arbitrary detention, and even assassination. These attacks often occur in response to their efforts to defend vulnerable groups, political opponents, human rights defenders and civil society organizations. Such persecution erodes not only individual fundamental freedoms but also the very pillars of the rule of law, including access to justice and the right to a fair trial.
Without systematic documentation of these violations, the international community faces significant challenges in responding effectively. The absence of reliable, global data limits the impact of advocacy, obscures patterns of repression and delays life-saving interventions. A secure, centralised database of verified cases is urgently needed to strengthen protection for the legal profession and uphold equal treatment before the law.
